During my SOBO ’21 thru-hike, I enjoyed the experience of each and every hostel I stayed in. Each one has its own personality… a flavor, and each was a gamble. I loved the adventure of not knowing who I would meet, how much money I would spend, and how long I would end up staying (based on the first two factors).
It became my passion to own a hostel and I found the perfect one for me in Uncle Johnny’s. I cherish the history of UJ; I like the town of Erwin more and more; and I love being the owner of UJ.
Many crazy, good times are ahead of Uncle Johnny’s and I will share thousands of unique experiences with NOBOs, SOBOs, Flip-Floppers, and Section/Day hikers for decades to come.

We’ve been operating as a hostel since 2012 in that location, offering hikers rides into town and a clean, affordable place to stay and clean up. Downstairs, we also run a small casual café-style restaurant named The Yellow Deli. We also have other locations along the trail: our organic Stoneybrook Farm in Hillsboro, VA (near Harper’s Ferry, WV)
When staying at any of our hostels, we don’t ask for money, although donations are appreciated to help us carry on. But in exchange for your stay, we ask that you contribute some of your time and skills to help further our efforts. Whether it’s carpentry or mechanical skills, helping out on the farm with garden or animal chores, or simply helping us make the meal and clean up afterward. We appreciate your help in keeping us going.
If you need a greater time of recharging, we invite you to stay on for several days. Please help us out and improve the hostel so other hikers’ experience will be even better. We appreciate any time donations anyone can give. But again, it’s not an obligation or expectation — just whatever you can do.

As thru hikers ourselves we know what hikers crave and at Shaw’s you will find everything you need, as well as the comforts of home. If you don’t see it just ask. We will make every effort to help you along your hike. Relax and enjoy a cold Maine craft beer or soda with us and share a story. We love hearing about your hike!
The Shaw’s famous breakfast has been a trail legacy since the 70s. Old man Shaw used to as if you wanted a 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4. That was the number of eggs, bacon, and pancakes he would heap on your plate. Today, we serve a solid 3×3 to every guest and enhance the experience with thick cut bacon, all you can eat wild Maine blueberry pancakes, and Poet’s famous home fries. Poet’s home fries are made with extra virgin olive oil, sweet onions, Maine potatoes, garlic, and Himalayan pink salt. Rooms
Our rates are reasonably priced! Our rooms are “clean, uncomplicated and authentic,” according to one of our favorite, regularly lodging guests! Our rooms are generally rented by the “bed” not the room unless you are requesting and paying for a private room. This is to allow for the most rentals possible during our busy seasons (June through early October) and the most cost effective sleeping arrangement for our guests. While not upscale, you will feel right at home in our fully furnished private and shared rooms.
Hostel-esque or European style is a good way to describe the lodging area: all three bedrooms share the common area with couches and some basic kitchen facilities as well as a shared bathroom (two shared bathrooms in the summer – one upstairs in the hostel and the other in the first floor restaurant’s dining room). We have two stacked washer/dryers as well ($5 per wash/dry; includes detergent).
We have three bedrooms which total 9 beds at present with current Off-Season pricing:
- Twin beds/bunks are $30 per person.
- Full beds or Queen bed for a shared room are $50.
- Private room $100/night.
- The whole floor can be rented for $250 per night.
- For more than 4 people per room $15 extra for a 5th person.
- All rooms add 9% tax.
Scroll down to see the configuration of each of our rooms!
WiFi is free, and the entire building is Wireless! The cell phone coverage can be spotty, but is getting better all the time. Monson has high speed fiber optic internet now. Verizon booster on site. A kitchenette in the shared lounge offers a mini-fridge, coffee maker, microwave, basic dishes, and utensils. The living room has a television with a DVD/VCR player and Amazon Fire stick. There are also numerous videos from all genres. The shelves are lined with books, puzzles, and games. There are ample cozy spots for reading and relaxing. Each room is unique and offers the comforts of home for the active vacationer. There are also plenty of fans!
Bathrooms
We have one bathroom on the second floor where the bedrooms are and, during summer peak months, one more full bath on the first floor where the restaurant is.
