Along with our spirited children and trail dog, we have made Shaw’s in Monson, Maine our new home. Our home is your home!
As thru hikers ourselves we know what hikers crave and at Shaw’s you will find everything you need, as well as the comforts of home. If you don’t see it just ask. We will make every effort to help you along your hike. Relax and enjoy a cold Maine craft beer or soda with us and share a story. We love hearing about your hike!
The Shaw’s famous breakfast has been a trail legacy since the 70s. Old man Shaw used to as if you wanted a 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4. That was the number of eggs, bacon, and pancakes he would heap on your plate. Today, we serve a solid 3×3 to every guest and enhance the experience with thick cut bacon, all you can eat wild Maine blueberry pancakes, and Poet’s famous home fries. Poet’s home fries are made with extra virgin olive oil, sweet onions, Maine potatoes, garlic, and Himalayan pink salt. We also accommodate our vegan, gluten free, and vegetarian friends with extra eggs, vegan or gluten free pancakes, and extra home fries. In short, NO HIKER WILL LEAVE OUR TABLE UNSATISFIED.

n 2013, Greg and Jen left the corporate world where work more, make more, spend more was the mantra, and moved to Costa Rica. They became experts on the country and each wrote Amazon best selling books on the subject of chucking it all and moving abroad. You can find Jen’s Amazon Author Page here and Greg’s Amazon Author Page here. Jen also has a successful jewelry business, which was established in Costa Rica (and since has incorporated adventure hiking jewelry!).
After 4 years of enjoying Costa Rica and a new fondness for hiking in the mountains of the Central Valley where they lived, the couple decided it was time for a new adventure. What could be better than spending 6 months living in the woods and hiking the entire Appalachian Trail?
Starting on Springer Mountain, Georgia on March 22, 2017 and ending on Mount Katahdin, Maine on September 16, 2017 their thru-hike was THE adventure of a lifetime! Along the way they became known by their trail names Chica and Sunsets, and documented their journey daily on their YouTube channel Chica and Sunsets.
Since the AT, the couple has thru-hiked the Camino de Santiago, Bartram, Colorado, Ice Age, Foothills, Art Loeb, and New England trails (as well as the Tahoe Rim Trail and Benton MacKaye trails individually) – all documented on YouTube.
In 2020 they opened Chica & Sunsets Hostel for hikers hiking the Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trail, which they ran for 5 successful years and had a blast giving back to the hiking community.

Our goal at the Town’s Inn (“the Inn”) is to serve individuals, couples, families, and other groups who want to savor the recreational, educational, cultural, and social activities available in this idyllic setting that has not changed much since 1783 when Thomas Jefferson wrote: “The passage of the Patowmac through the Blue Ridge is perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in Nature… This scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic.” We hope you enjoy your visit to this well-preserved national treasure that includes both the historic town and its exquisite natural setting!
The Town’s Inn consists of two pre-Civil War stone residences: the Mountain House at 175 High Street (circa 1820) and the Heritage House at 179 High Street (circa 1840). Located in the heart of Lower Town (the historic market district of Harpers Ferry), we are a block from the Amtrak train station and a few steps away from not only the museums of the living history village (NPS.gov/hafe), but also the C&O Towpath (NPS.gov/choh) and the Appalachian Scenic Trail (nps.gov/appa), which offer bicycling, hiking, river sports, and more. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (almost heaven), is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, approximately 60 miles from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland, and provides a nice balance for urban/ suburban lifestyles. The mild temperatures year-round make the Inn a place for all seasons, for many reasons. The average high temperature in February is 45 degrees, which makes winter getaways especially appealing. Located on the main street of town in the middle of the historical village, the Inn is well equipped to accommodate retreats, reunions, special events, and fun-filled getaways for families, couples, and individuals. Gather for meals, meetings, or just relaxation in the common areas, which include the beautiful stone patios that surround and connect the two buildings of the Inn, the Parlor in the Heritage House at 179 High Street, and the Marketplace Country Store & Self-Serve Café in the Mountain House at 175 High Street.
LODGING: Each of the eight guest rooms in the Inn is unique — but all rooms have a fridge (about 3.5 cubic feet), a microwave, a coffeemaker, and complimentary coffee and tea. Six of the rooms have private bathrooms, but only three of these rooms have the private bathroom en suite. The other two rooms share one bathroom. All of the rooms are family-friendly — and two of the rooms are pet-friendly. The prices of the rooms range from $80 to $200.
MARKETPLACE COUNTRY STORE & SELF-SERVE CAFE: The Inn offers year-round dining and shopping (6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. daily). The Mountain House contains a self-serve Café featuring food from fine vendors and homemade specialties. Seating is available on the patios and on the balcony. The Café in the Mountain House has indoor seating, as well. We will happily prepare customized picnics and gift baskets. The little Marketplace Country Store features hiker resupply products ~ local snacks and beverages ~ local arts and crafts ~ gifts ~ toiletries ~ souvenirs ~ books ~ and more!
SPECIAL PACKAGES: Special packages can be arranged featuring recreational activities such as outdoor sports and tours to nearby wineries and breweries. The Inn also features educational activities through the American Health & Heritage Adventure Academy.
AMERICAN HEALTH & HERITAGE ACADEMY (AHHAA): The Academy, located on the premises, provides customized educational packages for individuals and groups with special interests. Courses are taught by local residents who live and work in or near Harpers Ferry, for example National Park Rangers, Appalachian Trail Conservancy staff, Shepherd University professors, and many other talented and gifted people who are eager to share their expertise about health, history, and our American heritage (including music, art, drama, and more) with visitors to Harpers Ferry. Any visitor can savor self instructional activities. See http://www.ExperienceHarpersFerry.com to learn more about this amazing village.
Contact the owner, Karan Townsend, at karantownsend@gmail.com for assistance in planning your visit to Harpers Ferry!
Bunk rooms, shared, private rooms available. Common area with wifi and DVDs.
