Making it to or through the White Mountains is a huge accomplishment. Stop in at the Notch to recuperate, relax, and resupply. Hikers voted the Notch in the top five hostels on the trail two years in a row on the Trek! We serve AT hikers from both Kinsman Notch and Franconia Notch.
The Notch Hostel is an 1890 farmhouse in North Woodstock, NH, that two young hikers from Massachusetts purchased and converted into a 30-guest hostel in 2015. Located one mile from downtown Lincoln/N. Woodstock and just minutes from Franconia Notch, Loon Mountain, and the Kancamagus Highway, this hostel is perfectly situated for any White Mountain adventure.
Stay in one of our shared or private rooms and enjoy our guest kitchens, lounge areas, and gardens. Thru- and section hikers on the Appalachian Trail can access us from Kinsman and Franconia Notch, and enjoy slackpacking and other special services. We’re open summer and winter, so come check us out on your next visit to the White Mountains! All our policies are listed here.
Guests consistently rate the Notch as one of the cleanest and most secure hostels they’ve ever stayed at. The porches and fire pits are the place to be on summer nights, and the winter crowd gathers around the indoor stove to share stories from the day. We have dog-friendly rooms and, in summer, a fenced-in yard where pups can run free. The Notch has been featured in NH Chronicle, Guides Gone Wild, The In Solidarity Project, Outside Magazine, The Trek, The Caledonian Record, NH PBS, and more. So what are you waiting for? Come stay at the Notch!
When you stay at the Notch, you get more than just a room. Our goal at the Town’s Inn (“the Inn”) is to serve individuals, couples, families, and other groups who want to savor the recreational, educational, cultural, and social activities available in this idyllic setting that has not changed much since 1783 when Thomas Jefferson wrote: “The passage of the Patowmac through the Blue Ridge is perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in Nature… This scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic.” We hope you enjoy your visit to this well-preserved national treasure that includes both the historic town and its exquisite natural setting!
The Town’s Inn consists of two pre-Civil War stone residences: the Mountain House at 175 High Street (circa 1820) and the Heritage House at 179 High Street (circa 1840). Located in the heart of Lower Town (the historic market district of Harpers Ferry), we are a block from the Amtrak train station and a few steps away from not only the museums of the living history village (NPS.gov/hafe), but also the C&O Towpath (NPS.gov/choh) and the Appalachian Scenic Trail (nps.gov/appa), which offer bicycling, hiking, river sports, and more. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (almost heaven), is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, approximately 60 miles from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland, and provides a nice balance for urban/ suburban lifestyles. The mild temperatures year-round make the Inn a place for all seasons, for many reasons. The average high temperature in February is 45 degrees, which makes winter getaways especially appealing. Located on the main street of town in the middle of the historical village, the Inn is well equipped to accommodate retreats, reunions, special events, and fun-filled getaways for families, couples, and individuals. Gather for meals, meetings, or just relaxation in the common areas, which include the beautiful stone patios that surround and connect the two buildings of the Inn, the Parlor in the Heritage House at 179 High Street, and the Marketplace Country Store & Self-Serve Café in the Mountain House at 175 High Street.
LODGING: Each of the eight guest rooms in the Inn is unique — but all rooms have a fridge (about 3.5 cubic feet), a microwave, a coffeemaker, and complimentary coffee and tea. Six of the rooms have private bathrooms, but only three of these rooms have the private bathroom en suite. The other two rooms share one bathroom. All of the rooms are family-friendly — and two of the rooms are pet-friendly. The prices of the rooms range from $80 to $200.
MARKETPLACE COUNTRY STORE & SELF-SERVE CAFE: The Inn offers year-round dining and shopping (6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. daily). The Mountain House contains a self-serve Café featuring food from fine vendors and homemade specialties. Seating is available on the patios and on the balcony. The Café in the Mountain House has indoor seating, as well. We will happily prepare customized picnics and gift baskets. The little Marketplace Country Store features hiker resupply products ~ local snacks and beverages ~ local arts and crafts ~ gifts ~ toiletries ~ souvenirs ~ books ~ and more!
SPECIAL PACKAGES: Special packages can be arranged featuring recreational activities such as outdoor sports and tours to nearby wineries and breweries. The Inn also features educational activities through the American Health & Heritage Adventure Academy.
AMERICAN HEALTH & HERITAGE ACADEMY (AHHAA): The Academy, located on the premises, provides customized educational packages for individuals and groups with special interests. Courses are taught by local residents who live and work in or near Harpers Ferry, for example National Park Rangers, Appalachian Trail Conservancy staff, Shepherd University professors, and many other talented and gifted people who are eager to share their expertise about health, history, and our American heritage (including music, art, drama, and more) with visitors to Harpers Ferry. Any visitor can savor self instructional activities. See http://www.ExperienceHarpersFerry.com to learn more about this amazing village.

We are a small, family owned business that was established by Mike and Judy Fiorentino. The pair had a dream of owning a campground and in 1995, they made that dream a reality. They were living in Florida at the time and visiting Amicalola Falls State Park with their children and some friends when they came across the property that is now Under The Hemlock. They bought the property, moved their family to Georgia, and got to work. Mike and Judy built their family home, the country store, a bath house, and three cabins all by milling wood from trees cut on the property. This truly was a labor of love and something they knew would be their legacy in life. Now 30 years later, they’re able to have their children and grandchildren be involved. We’d love to have you visit our little oasis and explore all the wonderful attractions nearby. Some of those include Amicalola Falls State Park, Burt’s Pumpkin Farm, Ellijay Apple country, Blue Ridge and the famous downtown of Dahlonega. We hope to see you real soon!
