Braemar Castle Hostel was the headquarters for a logging company in the early 1900s. It was bought by the current owners great grandfather in the 1930s and turned into a residence and boarding house. The nicest and cleanest hostel I have stayed at.

The Appalachian Trail-er has space for ten and is located on the A.T. in beautiful Hot Springs, North Carolina. True to its name, the Trail-er is a 1,600+ square foot converted double wide that serves as a basecamp for all manner of BRHC trips, as well as a bunkhouse for hikers, backpackers, trail runners and paddlers. Reservations should be made in advance at 828-622-3319, as walk-ups are based on availability and the caretaker’s schedule. The Trail-er has a small retail counter with limited backpacking supplies and BRHC merch.Bookings include a clean bunk with linens, a hot shower, wifi, TV, kitchen access, and all the amenities Hot Springs has to offer. Gear and logistics are the two biggest hurdles that keep people from backpacking more often. With a selection of rental gear, shuttle services, and trip planning services, the Appalachian Trail-er offers a quick fix for both. Trip planning services include detailed trip itineraries, information about campsite locations, meal plans, etc.
We rent packs, tents, sleeping bags and pads, trekking poles, camp stoves, cookware, first aid kits, water filters, you name it. We also sell trail maps and have meal packages available (with advanced reservations). Just bring your clothes, toiletries, and personal items and you’re good to go!
To access the Appalachian Trail from the Trail-er… just walk out the front door! Or take a shuttle. Our seven passenger 4WD vehicle can take you anywhere you want to go within a two-hour radius, with the most popular trailheads being Max Patch (20 trail miles south), Davenport Gap (36 trail miles south, at the north end of the Smokies), and Allen Gap (15 trail miles north). The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world! It crosses through 14 states, from Maine to Georgia. It runs for 2,190 miles, and more than 71 of those miles run through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It takes about 7 days to hike the part of trail that runs through the National Park, but you can cut it shorter by making Clingmans Dome or Newfound Gap the midpoint. At Clingmans Dome, you’ll reach the highest point in all of Tennessee! When you hike the trail, you’ll see the beauty of the Smoky Mountains firsthand. Welcome to Switchback Creek Campground.We are a motorcycle and family friendly campground located in the mountains of North East Tennessee built by a rider. If you are tired of the hype and hustle of Deals Gap but would like exciting roads and beautiful mountain scenery then you have come to the right place. We are snuggled between three mountains at an elevation of 3,000 feet and just 2 1/2 miles from the crossroads US 421 and 91/133. Take a leisurely ride on any of the roads leading out of Shady Valley or gather with a group and ride “the snake ” . There are 489 curves within a 12 mile radius of the crossroads. Want to make this a family or group outing? There are various attractions available in the area. White water rafting, hiking on the AT, antique shopping, theaters, caverns, bicycling the creeper trail and many more activity’s within a days adventure. The Appalachian Trail-er has space for ten and is located on the A.T. in beautiful Hot Springs, North Carolina. True to its name, the Trail-er is a 1,600+ square foot converted double wide that serves as a basecamp for all manner of BRHC trips, as well as a bunkhouse for hikers, backpackers, trail runners and paddlers. Reservations should be made in advance at 828-622-3319, as walk-ups are based on availability and the caretaker’s schedule. The Trail-er has a small retail counter with limited backpacking supplies and BRHC merch.Bookings include a clean bunk with linens, a hot shower, wifi, TV, kitchen access, and all the amenities Hot Springs has to offer. Gear and logistics are the two biggest hurdles that keep people from backpacking more often. With a selection of rental gear, shuttle services, and trip planning services, the Appalachian Trail-er offers a quick fix for both. Trip planning services include detailed trip itineraries, information about campsite locations, meal plans, etc.
We rent packs, tents, sleeping bags and pads, trekking poles, camp stoves, cookware, first aid kits, water filters, you name it. We also sell trail maps and have meal packages available (with advanced reservations). Just bring your clothes, toiletries, and personal items and you’re good to go!
To access the Appalachian Trail from the Trail-er… just walk out the front door! Or take a shuttle. Our seven passenger 4WD vehicle can take you anywhere you want to go within a two-hour radius, with the most popular trailheads being Max Patch (20 trail miles south), Davenport Gap (36 trail miles south, at the north end of the Smokies), and Allen Gap (15 trail miles north). The Iron Horse Station is a landmark inn, restaurant, tavern, and shops located in the heart of Hot Springs, North Carolina, a historic mountain town situated directly on the Appalachian Trail. The Iron Horse Station has been renovated and extensively restored; transforming the Inn, Restaurant, Tavern, and Shops into a charming destination surrounded by the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains and the French Broad River.

During my SOBO ’21 thru-hike, I enjoyed the experience of each and every hostel I stayed in. Each one has its own personality… a flavor, and each was a gamble. I loved the adventure of not knowing who I would meet, how much money I would spend, and how long I would end up staying (based on the first two factors).
It became my passion to own a hostel and I found the perfect one for me in Uncle Johnny’s. I cherish the history of UJ; I like the town of Erwin more and more; and I love being the owner of UJ.
Many crazy, good times are ahead of Uncle Johnny’s and I will share thousands of unique experiences with NOBOs, SOBOs, Flip-Floppers, and Section/Day hikers for decades to come.
Step outside, breathe in some fresh Appalachian mountain air and get ready to enjoy the Nolichucky River in East Tennessee. We have cabins & camping spots for tents and RV’s within a short drive from both Asheville, NC, and the Tri-Cities areas. (Just follow I-26 towards Erwin and the rafting road signs will lead you here from exit 40.)
We share our home year-round with fellow mountain and river lovers and have been doing so for over 35 years. We are located just off the Appalachian Trail and at the “take-out” along the Nolichucky River Gorge, which surrounds us with gorgeous views at the base of Unaka Mountain.
The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world! It crosses through 14 states, from Maine to Georgia. It runs for 2,190 miles, and more than 71 of those miles run through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It takes about 7 days to hike the part of trail that runs through the National Park, but you can cut it shorter by making Clingmans Dome or Newfound Gap the midpoint. At Clingmans Dome, you’ll reach the highest point in all of Tennessee! When you hike the trail, you’ll see the beauty of the Smoky Mountains firsthand. Not only is it a great experience, but it is great exercise as well! Stay at The Appy Lodge and get a good night’s rest before embarking on your journey on the Appalachian Trail!

Starting on Springer Mountain, Georgia on March 22, 2017 and ending on Mount Katahdin, Maine on September 16, 2017 their thru-hike was THE adventure of a lifetime! Along the way they became known by their trail names Chica and Sunsets, and documented their journey daily on their YouTube channel Chica and Sunsets.
Since the AT, the couple has thru-hiked the Camino de Santiago, Bartram, Colorado, Ice Age, Foothills, Art Loeb, and New England trails (as well as the Tahoe Rim Trail and Benton MacKaye trails individually) – all documented on YouTube.

Take a leisurely ride on any of the roads leading out of Shady Valley or gather with a group and ride “the snake ” . There are 489 curves within a 12 mile radius of the crossroads.
