The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world! It crosses through 14 states, from Maine to Georgia. It runs for 2,190 miles, and more than 71 of those miles run through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It takes about 7 days to hike the part of trail that runs through the National Park, but you can cut it shorter by making Clingmans Dome or Newfound Gap the midpoint. At Clingmans Dome, you’ll reach the highest point in all of Tennessee! When you hike the trail, you’ll see the beauty of the Smoky Mountains firsthand. Braemar Castle Hostel was the headquarters for a logging company in the early 1900s. It was bought by the current owners great grandfather in the 1930s and turned into a residence and boarding house. The nicest and cleanest hostel I have stayed at.

If you are tired of the hype and hustle of Deals Gap but would like exciting roads and beautiful mountain scenery then you have come to the right place. We are snuggled between three mountains at an elevation of 3,000 feet and just 2 1/2 miles from the crossroads US 421 and 91/133. Take a leisurely ride on any of the roads leading out of Shady Valley or gather with a group and ride “the snake ” . There are 489 curves within a 12 mile radius of the crossroads. Want to make this a family or group outing? There are various attractions available in the area. White water rafting, hiking on the AT, antique shopping, theaters, caverns, bicycling the creeper trail and many more activity’s within a days adventure. The Iron Horse Station is a landmark inn, restaurant, tavern, and shops located in the heart of Hot Springs, North Carolina, a historic mountain town situated directly on the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail-er has space for ten and is located on the A.T. in beautiful Hot Springs, North Carolina. True to its name, the Trail-er is a 1,600+ square foot converted double wide that serves as a basecamp for all manner of BRHC trips, as well as a bunkhouse for hikers, backpackers, trail runners and paddlers. Reservations should be made in advance at 828-622-3319, as walk-ups are based on availability and the caretaker’s schedule. The Trail-er has a small retail counter with limited backpacking supplies and BRHC merch.Bookings include a clean bunk with linens, a hot shower, wifi, TV, kitchen access, and all the amenities Hot Springs has to offer. Gear and logistics are the two biggest hurdles that keep people from backpacking more often. With a selection of rental gear, shuttle services, and trip planning services, the Appalachian Trail-er offers a quick fix for both. Trip planning services include detailed trip itineraries, information about campsite locations, meal plans, etc.
We rent packs, tents, sleeping bags and pads, trekking poles, camp stoves, cookware, first aid kits, water filters, you name it. We also sell trail maps and have meal packages available (with advanced reservations). Just bring your clothes, toiletries, and personal items and you’re good to go!
To access the Appalachian Trail from the Trail-er… just walk out the front door! Or take a shuttle. Our seven passenger 4WD vehicle can take you anywhere you want to go within a two-hour radius, with the most popular trailheads being Max Patch (20 trail miles south), Davenport Gap (36 trail miles south, at the north end of the Smokies), and Allen Gap (15 trail miles north). The Quarter Way Inn is a delightful hiker hostel only 0.3 miles west of the Appalachian Trail at mile 556.1 in Ceres, Virginia. We offer a full resupply shop, the “Best Platinum Breakfast on the AT,” and overnight lodging for weary hikers. All of our lodging options include laundry, loaner clothes, shower (with towel, soap, shampoo, and conditioner), and morning coffee. Our hostel is in a spacious and comfortable farm house next to the most majestic sycamore tree you will ever see (obviously not pictured – that’s a redbud). We welcome thru and section hikers who are looking for a welcoming place to relax and rest up for the next leg of their journey.
We have 8 Twin XL beds and 1 Full XL bed in the upstairs bunkhouse and 1 Full XL bed private room in the bunkhouse. We also have 1 Queen private bedroom in the main house. We’ve got hot showers, Fast WiFi, a full resupply store, laundry and 2 Amish general stores just a few miles away. We accept drop boxes- free with a stay and $5 to hold without a stay.
