Thru-hiking 101, is our week-long, hands-on course for aspiring thru-hikers. This course is intended to either be the start of your 2025 thru-hike attempt or taken the year prior to your 2026 thru-hike attempt. This course is led by thru-hiker and Registered Maine Guide, Koty aka Trash Panda.
Operating out of Millinocket, Maine near Baxter State Park, we are the closest dedicated hiker service to Katahdin and the northern-half of the 100-Mile Wilderness. We provide service to AT thru-hikers, section hikers, day hikers, slack-packers, and visitors sight-seeing in the Katahdin region.
There are 6.5 bedrooms with bedding and blankets provided. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan, Roku Smart TV’s, sound sleep machines, charging pad & cables, ear plugs, and sleep masks. They also have a lockable interior door and a lockable exterior door. Each exterior door exits to the large rear deck . There’s a big ol’ rear deck with a table, benches, and umbrella. There’s also a comfy hammock and some extra camp chairs. The living room, kitchen, and laundry is one long, light-filled room. There are two ceiling fans, a Roku Smart TV, DVD player w/ corny DVDs, desk, first aid, old-school board games, and books. Laundry detergent is available for you to use. The kitchen has all the stuff a modest family kitchen would have. There’s always a bunch of free coffee pods, frozen waffles, and some other goodies. The sofa also converts to a full bed.
There are 3 full bathrooms. Each bathroom has towels, hand towels, and washcloths. Also provided are shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and hand soap. In addition, there are extra razors, shaving cream, lotions, bath balm, toothbrush, and toothpaste. Oh, and we’ve got footbaths, hair dryers, and boot dryers too.

We open the doors for our fourth season on April 1st, 2024, and look forward to a busy and fulfilling season supporting the AT Class of 2024 and all others who enjoy the great outdoors! As 2018 thru hikers, we know what hikers need. We invite you to stop in for a stay in our log cabin home. We, David and Danielle, (Texas and Stumbles) have transformed the lower level of our home into a place where hikers can relax and recharge. Spend time on one of our decks, get cozy on one of the couches in our common area, and sink into one of our memory foam beds at the end of the day, all linens provided. We’ll pick you up in “Big Blue” and take you home for a hot shower, laundry, resupply and dinner run, and send you on your way the next morning after eating a hiker sized hot breakfast. Founded as early as 1732, the inn has seen history. In 1755 it is probable that General Edward Braddock, accompanied by the young Lt. George Washington, marched his army past on the way to his fatal encounter with the French and Indians near Fort Duquesne.
By the late 1700ís pioneers had begun to roll steadily through Turner’s Gap on the National Trail to settle the land to the west. The South Mountain Inn uniquely served as a wagon stand as well as a stagecoach stop for the heavy traffic passing on the National Road after it was surfaced in the 1820ís. In the years that followed, the inn was visited by many Washington leaders, including Daniel Webster and Henry Clay, and several Presidents. For Clay and Webster particularly, it was a favorite resting spot. Clay was often called the father of the National Road; the road itself was sometimes termed the Henry Clay Road.
During the Civil War period, South Mountain Inn was a part of two pivotal events, the John Brown Raid on Harpers Ferry, and the Antietam Campaign. In 1859 the inn was captured and held overnight as an outpost and probable staging point by Brown’s followers. Three years later it was the headquarters of Confederate Gen. D.H. Hill during the Battle of South Mountain, prelim to the Battle of Antietam.
Following the Civil War, the business of the tavern declined, due in large part to the reduced importance of the National Road as the railroads spread across the mountains. The property was sold in 1876 to Madeline Vinton Dahlgren, wealthy widow of Admiral John A. Dahlgren. The South Mountain House became a private residence, improved with attention to the antiquity of the building. Mrs. Dahlgren also built the stone Dahlgren Chapel, which is open to the public on summer weekends.
The house once again became a tavern in 1925 and continued as a local pub until its purchase in 1971 by Charles and Dorothea Reichmuth, who offered visitors a setting of historical authenticity, gracious hospitality, and good eating.
In 1981, Russell and Judy Schwartz purchased the Inn from The Reichmuths and offered American fine dining with an elegant Colonial atmosphere.
Then in 2001, the Inn was purchased by the Executive Chef and his wife, Chad and Lisa Dorsey, who are the present owners of the Inn.
For over 250 years The Old South Mountain Inn has remained a remarkable mainstay in an ever changing world.

The Appalachian Trail-er has space for ten and is located on the A.T. in beautiful Hot Springs, North Carolina. True to its name, the Trail-er is a 1,600+ square foot converted double wide that serves as a basecamp for all manner of BRHC trips, as well as a bunkhouse for hikers, backpackers, trail runners and paddlers. Reservations should be made in advance at 828-622-3319, as walk-ups are based on availability and the caretaker’s schedule. The Trail-er has a small retail counter with limited backpacking supplies and BRHC merch.Bookings include a clean bunk with linens, a hot shower, wifi, TV, kitchen access, and all the amenities Hot Springs has to offer. Gear and logistics are the two biggest hurdles that keep people from backpacking more often. With a selection of rental gear, shuttle services, and trip planning services, the Appalachian Trail-er offers a quick fix for both. Trip planning services include detailed trip itineraries, information about campsite locations, meal plans, etc.
We rent packs, tents, sleeping bags and pads, trekking poles, camp stoves, cookware, first aid kits, water filters, you name it. We also sell trail maps and have meal packages available (with advanced reservations). Just bring your clothes, toiletries, and personal items and you’re good to go!
To access the Appalachian Trail from the Trail-er… just walk out the front door! Or take a shuttle. Our seven passenger 4WD vehicle can take you anywhere you want to go within a two-hour radius, with the most popular trailheads being Max Patch (20 trail miles south), Davenport Gap (36 trail miles south, at the north end of the Smokies), and Allen Gap (15 trail miles north). The Catamount is very conveniently located on Route 7 in Bennington, just south of the intersection of Route 9 in a quiet neighborhood but only minutes from downtown. All of our rooms have outside entrances, dedicated parking, private bathrooms, air conditioning, individual thermostats for heating, satellite TV, WiFi, small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, writing desk, telephone with free local calling and alarm clocks. All have either two double beds or 1 queen bed. Ice, soda, and bottled water available. Restaurants and grocery stores are within walking distance. The hostel Yukon built is in the shape of a geodesic dome and is visually stunning to walk into. Bear Essentials
- Local shuttle – available by appointment. $2/mile. Book in advance. For longer shuttles by reservation, call Pip (717) 371-7646.
- Supplies/Food/Drinks/Firewood – for purchase
- Gourmet coffee – for purchase
- Showers – 1 shower per 24 hours included with stay/$5 for passerbys or for guests who want more than 1 shower per day
- Communal campfire & firewood – campfire included with stay
- Natural spring water – free for all hikers
- Gas grill – included with stay
- Laundry & loaner clothes – $5 each load (includes washer/dryer). Loaner clothes included with laundry. We have a clothesline for gear drying.
- Coming in 2025! Overnight parking $10/day
- Charging station (also available to passerbys – we just ask that you make a purchase at the snack shack)

In a secluded setting with an amazing view of the Appalachian Trail, Hudson and Lu offer accommodations in their home guest level area. Call or text Hudson at 860-480-2966 last pickup 6:00. Our B&D welcomes outdoor enthusiast in a communal atmosphere.
$50 per person shuttle fee includes the following:
Shuttle to and from trail between W. Cornwall Road and Salisbury CT and to their Post Offices
- Government Issued ID is required and must be shown at the time of arrive
- Comfy bunk with clean linens, pillow, sheets & blankets
- Clean showers, towels and bathing amenities provided
- Communal laundry we wash & dry you sort & fold
- Hearty Breakfast (no additional cost)
- First Aide, personal hygiene items and ice packs available
- Wi-Fi via Satellite Internet
- DirectTV along with an assortment of movies
- Complimentary Ice Tea & Lemonade
- Hiker’s refrigerator to store your additional calories
- Dinner $10pp for 5 or more guest participants
- Lounge outside in a hammock or kickback at one of one many picnic tables
- Indoor & outdoor clothes lines for your drying needs
- Free slack-pack with second night stay (with in the our area of no cost shuttle)

- Shuttle Service for a fee text Hudson for information 860-480-2966. Example of shuttle services: Bradley Airport, Amtrak Station – Rhinecliff NY, MetroNorth Train Station – Wassaic NY and shuttles between Delaware Water Gap to Manchester Center, VT.
- Short term resupplies including; Stove fuel, Aquamira, BodyGlide, bug repellent, pizza, drinks, ice cream & snacks
- Section Hikers – Slack-packing without stay text for information

The Cabins in the Woods is a gorgeous property nestled above Stecoah Valley just off NC-28. With some of the most spectacular scenery in Western North Carolina, we are situated in the center of all the outdoor activities you could want. The views are fantastic, and the laid back atmosphere makes your cares float away on a gentle mountain breeze.
