The hostel Yukon built is in the shape of a geodesic dome and is visually stunning to walk into. Hikers basically have the run of the place, with the exception of certain areas marked “Staff Only.” The doors are generally left open and it wasn’t unusual to see three or four dogs wandering around or playing among the hikers
Roan Mountain Shuttle Service for the Appalachian Trail
There are 6.5 bedrooms with bedding and blankets provided. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan, Roku Smart TV’s, sound sleep machines, charging pad & cables, ear plugs, and sleep masks. They also have a lockable interior door and a lockable exterior door. Each exterior door exits to the large rear deck . There’s a big ol’ rear deck with a table, benches, and umbrella. There’s also a comfy hammock and some extra camp chairs. The living room, kitchen, and laundry is one long, light-filled room. There are two ceiling fans, a Roku Smart TV, DVD player w/ corny DVDs, desk, first aid, old-school board games, and books. Laundry detergent is available for you to use. The kitchen has all the stuff a modest family kitchen would have. There’s always a bunch of free coffee pods, frozen waffles, and some other goodies. The sofa also converts to a full bed.
There are 3 full bathrooms. Each bathroom has towels, hand towels, and washcloths. Also provided are shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and hand soap. In addition, there are extra razors, shaving cream, lotions, bath balm, toothbrush, and toothpaste. Oh, and we’ve got footbaths, hair dryers, and boot dryers too.

We open the doors for our fourth season on April 1st, 2024, and look forward to a busy and fulfilling season supporting the AT Class of 2024 and all others who enjoy the great outdoors! As 2018 thru hikers, we know what hikers need. We invite you to stop in for a stay in our log cabin home. We, David and Danielle, (Texas and Stumbles) have transformed the lower level of our home into a place where hikers can relax and recharge. Spend time on one of our decks, get cozy on one of the couches in our common area, and sink into one of our memory foam beds at the end of the day, all linens provided. We’ll pick you up in “Big Blue” and take you home for a hot shower, laundry, resupply and dinner run, and send you on your way the next morning after eating a hiker sized hot breakfast. We are excited to meet the class of 2024!

Our property consists of 20 acres of the beautiful Blue Mountain. At the Lookout you can see for 40 Miles across the valley below. With views from Allentown, Lyons and Reading. The area with the view is a shared area for both sites. Feel free to use the fire ring while you sit and watch the evening sky. It is breathtaking at night. At the bottom of the mountain there is a Gunclub with a shooting range and you will hear shooting from the property. Please note it is far away and there is no danger Our property is mostly the mountain side. But with an area that is flat for tent camping. The property is close to Route 309 but there is a camping area away from the road. Our land is next to the road and you will hear some road noise. We are next to National Parks land which also consists of the Appalachian Trail and also against the Pennsylvania Game Lands. You can walk up the street or trail to Thunderhead Lodge Restaurant. Leaser lake is a short drive if you like fishing or kayaking. The Wanamakers Store is a unique place to visit with amazing sandwiches. The Wanamakers and Kemton railroad is close by for a weekend train ride. Bear Rock Junction is close by for mini golf and ice cream. Eight Oaks Distillery is only a few minutes away. Several wineries and antique shops as well. You may also see Appalachian Trail Thru Hikers come thru our property to stay at the hostel. Please welcome our hikers as they come to rest their weary bodies. Welcome to the Lookout. We have made many improvements to our land but also try to maintain the beauty it is. We plan to keep upgrading our property. We plan to use the land for Recreational activites. We have a Hiker Hostel in the Building. The Building was previously the Blue Mountain Lookout Restaurant but has been neglected for approximately 20 years. We are trying to restore the property to bring it back to life.

There is a “community” computer available with internet access so you can check/send email or take care of any other business before hitting the trail. Wireless internet is also available.
While there is no time limit for computer usage, please be considerate of other guests who also want to use this service.
Trains
Luray is a train town. We can’t get away from them. The hostel is across the street from train tracks. Cargo trains do run at all hours and most night conductors are courteous of sleepers. However, there is a cross over about 300 yards from the hostel. Since safety is of utmost importance, the whistle blows in front of the hostel when trains are traveling out of town.
Kitchen Facilities
- We have a full kitchen for guests to use.
- It is stocked with dishes, glasses, silverware, and cookware.
- All we ask is that you completely clean up after yourself for the next person.
- There is also a refrigerator where you can keep that leftover pizza, or if you’re staying for a few days, stock up on groceries.
Laundry – $5 a la cart
- We provide laundry services for guests. Laundry (wash/dry/detergent) is $5 per load.
- Shared loads are permissible.
Pets
Well-mannered, house-broken and “relatively” clean dogs are allowed in the main hostel building. Dogs may be bathed in The Cave shower… dog shampoo is provided.
- Please keep your dog under control at all times.
- Dogs may not be left at the hostel unsupervised.
- The dog-owner is solely responsible for the actions of his/her dog.
- If any damage is done to the hostel or other hikers’ gear, compensation will be expected.
- We are owned by 2 cats that are tolerant of well-mannered dogs, so please keep that in mind.
