Appalachian Trail Lodging in Tennessee

Lodging along the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee offers hikers a variety of options to rest and recover while exploring the state’s scenic and rugged sections of the trail. While the AT itself features shelters and campsites, many hikers opt for accommodations in nearby towns such as Gatlinburg, Cherokee, and Erwin, which are easily accessible from the trail. These towns offer a mix of charming inns, motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and hostels that cater to thru-hikers and section hikers. Some of these accommodations offer comfortable amenities like hot showers, laundry facilities, and resupply options, while others provide shuttle services to trailheads for convenience. For those looking to immerse themselves in nature, there are also rustic cabins and lodges nestled in the Smoky Mountains, offering a more secluded retreat. Whether seeking basic, budget-friendly lodging or more luxurious comforts, Tennessee’s Appalachian Trail lodging options ensure hikers can find a place to rest, recharge, and enjoy the stunning surroundings.

151 River Rd, Erwin, TN 37650, USA

Rustic trail-side lodging with free WiFi & shuttles to town, an outfitter/store & a laundry service.

During my SOBO ’21 thru-hike, I enjoyed the experience of each and every hostel I stayed in. Each one has its own personality… a flavor, and each was a gamble. I loved the adventure of not knowing who I would meet, how much money I would spend, and how long I would end up staying (based on the first two factors).

It became my passion to own a hostel and I found the perfect one for me in Uncle Johnny’s. I cherish the history of UJ; I like the town of Erwin more and more; and I love being the owner of UJ.

Many crazy, good times are ahead of Uncle Johnny’s and I will share thousands of unique experiences with NOBOs, SOBOs, Flip-Floppers, and Section/Day hikers for decades to come.

168 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN 37738, USA

The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world! It crosses through 14 states, from Maine to Georgia. It runs for 2,190 miles, and more than 71 of those miles run through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It takes about 7 days to hike the part of trail that runs through the National Park, but you can cut it shorter by making Clingmans Dome or Newfound Gap the midpoint. At Clingmans Dome, you’ll reach the highest point in all of Tennessee! When you hike the trail, you’ll see the beauty of the Smoky Mountains firsthand. Not only is it a great experience, but it is great exercise as well! Stay at The Appy Lodge and get a good night’s rest before embarking on your journey on the Appalachian Trail!

Braemar Castle Hostel was the headquarters for a logging company in the early 1900s. It was bought by the current owners great grandfather in the 1930s and turned into a residence and boarding house. The nicest and cleanest hostel I have stayed at.
